Chestnut-capped Brushfinch

The chestnut-capped brushfinch is 16 to 19.5 cm (6.3 to 7.7 in) long and weighs about 32 to 47 g (1.1 to 1.7 oz). It is one of the larger brushfinches. The sexes have the same plumage. Adults of the nominate subspecies A. b. brunneinucha have a wide black mask from their forehead and forecrown down to below the gape and back to the side of the neck. Within it they have a small white spot above the lores. Their crown and nape are chestnut with a thin yellowish tawny supercilium separating it from the top of the mask. Voice: One description of the chestnut-capped brushfinch's song is "a jumble of high-pitched, slurred whistles and staccato notes, peetee-zeer, peetee-súueet". Another is "a fairly slow, high-pitched series of sharp whistles: tseeee-tseeu-pseee-tzzzeeee". A third is "a high, sibilant series of thin whistles...for example: see-swee-sew-see-swee-SEER".

The grey-browed brushfinch is 19 to 20 cm (7.5 to 7.9 in) long. The sexes have the same plumage. Adults of the nominate subspecies A. a. assimilis have a black crown with a gray stripe in the middle and a gray supercilium that extends to the nape and wraps down around the back of the ear coverts to the sides of the breast. The rest of their face is black. Their upperparts, wings, and tail are olive-green. Their throat is white that continues through the breast and belly. The sides of their breast and flanks are gray and their vent grayish olive. Juveniles are generally olive with dusky cheeks. Voice: The grey-browed brushfinch's song is "a high, sibilant series of thin whistles with short spaces between separate phrases (often of three elements), e.g. weseer-twee twesee? Sewtsee? Weseer-twee tweswee? Sewtswee?...". Its calls include "a high ti and a tseer".
